The City RSL Sub-Branch, formed in 1918, is believed to be one of the first in Queensland although the actual date and membership details, held by State Headquarters, appear to have been amongst the records destroyed during the 1974 floods. It is understood that a bank manager (a returned serviceman) was instrumental in establishing the City RSL Sub-Branch. Although little is known about the early history of the Sub-Branch, it is known that back in 1937 City had a strong membership base.
The then City RSL Sub-Branch was in dire straits in the late 1990s, with only five members and no real prospects of resurrection. With the drive and enthusiasm of the remaining members and sound leadership over the last decade, the City RSL Sub-Branch, renamed City-New Farm in 2001, has indeed reversed what many would have seen as impossible. City-New Farm now has a good membership, is financially sound, and continues to grow.
City-New Farm RSL Sub-Branch supports the local community primarily through the New Farm RSL Care Haven Treetops with donations, regular visits to the residents and conducting commemorative services prior to both ANZAC and Remembrance Days for both the residents and staff of Treetops. The Sub Branch also works closely with other community groups that provide services such as support to the homeless, mental health support, and MND research.
City-New Farm RSL Sub Branch also now participates in the Year 6 Leadership Program run by New Farm State School, and provides support to 161 Army Cadet Unit (Aviation).
City-New Farm RSL Sub-Branch Remembrance Day Fundraising Appeal
City-New Farm launched their annual Remembrance Day Fundraising appeal with the additional support of Australian War Widows (QLD) and NTS Brisbane cadet unit, who began operating out of the Limbless Soldiers’ Building earlier this year. The Radio interview link: ABC Brisbane Breakfast with Craig Zonca and Loretta Ryan is provided where it promotes the appeal.
